Ring Resources

TipHey there!

You’ve found the “ring-facing” content of the website. This area is meant for team members but anyone is welcome! Here you’ll find a wiki-style collections of articles written by team members for team members. The point of this area is to collect useful information, standardize research practices, and provide an easy “on-ramp” for any future team member of the Research Ring at ALERRT.

Standard Operating Procedures (for Research)

Every project is different. Much like the “Pirates Code”, everything set down in this document should be viewed “more like guidelines than actual rules.” However, unless there is a pretty compelling reason for deviating from the template provided below, don’t. Keeping a consistent set of S.O.P.s will ensure that every project we undertake will have strong interoperability. This is important in a lot of contexts (e.g., adding a new team member to a project, revisiting an old project), so stick to the plan. Or else…

While every project is different, the projects that take up most of our time fall into one of two categories: research projects and grants (see the table below for a breakdown and examples).

Project Types
Research Project Grant

Experimental

  • Randomized controlled trial
  • Survey experiment

Government

  • Federal (e.g., FEMA, NSF, NIH)
  • State/Local

Observational

  • Descriptive analysis
  • Inferential analysis

Private

  • Research
  • Industry (e.g., evaluation)

In the entries that follow, the approaches used by the Research Ring at ALERRT will be spelled out.
